What are the most common Hanukkah gifts?
Since Hanukkah is usually around Christmas time, it has become very popular and even expected to
give Hanukkah gifts. In fact, many Jewish observers would find it a pleasant surprise to receive gifts
from their non- Jewish friends and acquaintances. Giving gifts of religious and cultural significance to
your Jewish friends or hosts who are celebrating Hanukkah will deliver a thoughtful message. All you
have to do is choose from this wide selection of Hanukkah gifts to show your solidarity with this festive
Jewish holiday. The most popular and best known item of Hanukkah gifts is the
Hanukkah Menorah.
We light the Hanukkah menorah to commemorate the rededication of the second Temple in Jerusalem
by the Maccabees, and the miracle of the oil that miraculously burned for eight successive days to keep
the temple lit.

Around 2000 years ago, the land of Israel was occupied by the Greek empire.  King Antiochus, the
leader of the Greek Empire, took control over the temple, filled it with images of Greek gods and
demanded that all Jews with no exception surrender to these gods. A small but determined Jewish
army under the leadership of the Macaabees finally defeated the Greeks after three years of bloody
battles - a great victory of the underdog over the big bully.
After removing all the Greek statues, the Maccabbees proceeded to light the holy Menorah in the temple,
but to everyone's dismay there was only a small jug of oil left for the temple’s lamp. The amount of oil
was enough to last only one day, but a miracle happened and the oil kept the menorah lit for eight whole
days. To commemorate this miracle, we light the Hanukkah menorah for eight successive days.

Every night for eight days, we light one candle on the Hanukkah Menorah which is a nine-branched
candelabra. The Hanukkah menorah has an additional spot for a candle called shamash. The
shamash is lit first and then used to light the other candles.

There is an overwhelming selection of Hanukkah menorahs on the web. Many designers have created
menorahs in different shapes and styles. While selecting a menorah, you should I yourself: who am I
buying this menorah for - relatives, friends, young or old? What style would they prefer, traditional or
modern? The prices range from a few dollars to more expensive ones which are uniquely designed by
Judaica artists. Many contemporary Judaica artists have skillfully combined old traditions with modern
spirit to create Hanukkah menorahs in prices that are affordable.

While a menorah seems an obvious choice, there are so many unique designs out there, and there
could never be too many menorahs in a Jewish home. Some even collect them! Hanukkah lamps will
fill every Jewish home with light and joy for years to come.

Hanukkah gift is the Dreidel. The dreidel is widely popular with the kids, and with the adults who are
young at heart. Several Israeli Judaica artists have turned this traditional game into a piece of art by
creating dreidels in original designs.

Other examples of popular and fun Hanukkah gifts are the chocolate coins imprinted with Hanukkah's
symbols. We might buy them for the kids, but as adults we know we love them just as much. Another
idea for a Hanukkah gift is to create or purchase a Hanukkah basket filled with Kosher wine, dreidels,
chocolate coins or any other kinds of small and symbolic Hanukkah gifts.
